Free Time activities

FOURTH DAY: Thursday 7th November

Workshop at Casa d'Erci

On the fourth day we went to Casa d'Erci which is an educational farm/museum in Borgo San Lorenzo. The first activity we did was making bread and we put it in the ovens. Then we visited an old house where they told us about the history of farming. After that we had lunch and we ate pasta, home made bread with salami and a lemon cake. Then we fed the goats as you can see in the photo.

Finally, the bread was ready so we got it and we ate it.

THIRD DAY: Wednesday 6th November

On the third day we visited the Textile Museum (Museo del tessuto), the Rifò company and Florence.

Rifò company

Rifo is a tuscan inflection of the verb "rifare", wich means "to remake, to redo" , a name that takes up the tradition of textile recycling born in Prato. There they showed us how they make new clothes out of old ones

Textile Museum

The textile museum is the largest cultural centre in Italy dedicated to the textile production and art, there we learned, saw and touched different types of textile materials.

Florence

We visited many famous landmarks in Florence, such as the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Michelangelo. We also saw many different statues like the one on the Fountaine of Neptune. We also had lunch there and it was delicious, we really enjoyed the traditional italian food.

SECOND DAY: Tuesday 5th November

Visit to COMISTRA srl

We visited the factory COMISTRA srl where we learnt more about recycling materials and the ways to reuse them.

The owner, Fabrizio Tesi, gave us an explanation about how dangerous textile industry can be, which made us aware of its consequences on the environment because it's the second most polluting activity in the world.

Nevertheless Mr. Tesi and his famiily, for four generations, are trying to reduce the waste of textile materials to make new garments.

That affected positivily our way of thinking about the resources we have and how we treat them, the power is in our hands!

FIRST DAY: Monday 4th November

School tour

We started our day with a tour of the school campus, they showed us almost the entirety of the school. We learned about different parts of the school like the labs for textile, chemistry, computer science and engineering. We were introduced to the school vice-president as he told us about the school history. My colleagues will go in detail of each lab in the next paragraph.

Presented survey

On the first morning at the school, our task was to go through each countries' answers from the pre-activity task. The students presented the answers.

PH test

The last activity we did was the PH Test where we took a sample from the Bisenzio river so we can discover whether the water was acidic or basic. We found put that the Ph was around 5.4 which is uncommon for this kind of water facilities.
