J4SP – Meeting in Paimio, Finland 28.1.-3.2.2024 Living in Finland: a sustainable future

FIFTH DAY: Friday 2nd February

On friday (2.02.2024) the already made groups presented what they have worked on. The projects varied from topics like the life of animals, the future schools, the food we will be eating in 2050, the cars and were cities are going to be located, technology. The students focused on explaining their points and getting their ideas to the audience. We exchanged opinions after the showcasing period.

FOURTH DAY: Thursday 1st February

Visit to forest school: Sustainable forestry in Finland

 
Finland being the country with a forest land of 75%, it is important for the country to utilize this potential. Therefore, Forrest School exists as a secondary school to educate Finnish youth about our nature. Forrest school teaches various fields such as woodwork, veterinary sciences, agriculture, etc. The instructor told us about the campus and a bit about the Forrest school's history. They let us go inside different machines and after that they showed us how they cut the trees. We ended the visit by eating some sausages, karjalanpiirakka's, snack bars and juices. And of course we played in the snow.

Company visit: Green North Energy


The object and the main goal of Elomatic is green hydrogen and ammoniac. Their goal is to replace grey hydrogen with green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy. Elomatic is the parent company of the green north energy. Their objective is to start the development of the green hydrogen and green fertilizer in 2027.

Guided tour in Turku


On Thursday after school activities, we had plenty of time to hang out in Turku. After the sightseeing, guests visited the Finnish shopping mall Hansakortteli and some even went to grab a cup of coffee in the famous Espresso House.

THIRD DAY: Wednesday 31th January

CIO: Future jobs (workshops)

Our task was to make presentations of how we imagine life in 2050. We thought about the future and how life is effected by futuristic environment in both utopic and dystopic way. We were separated in groups and we fused our imaginations to get some final results.

Even though we were from different countries, our ideas were pretty similar. We cooporated into putting our concepts together. The italians, croatians, french and bulgarians used the finnish students's laptops. We extended our communication skills and bonded together.

Sports activities: skiing in Paippi

 
 On Wednesday the exchange students went to ski in Paippi Paimio's skiing centre. They didn't find it easy at all, but it was fun regardless!


SECOND DAY: Tuesday 30th January

Visit to Oikiluoto Nuclear Power Plant

Every country has a different perspective of energy production. Even though some people have mixed feelings about nuclear energy, the Olkiluoto power plant generates more than 30% of Finland's energy. It has three nuclear reactors and takes up only 9 km² . We visited this company on January 30th. It was very interesting to learn about the advantages of nuclear energy and visit the silos in which slightly radioactive waste is stored.  


FIRST DAY: Monday 29th January

Pre-tasks for students: My fantasy profession
Task was to draw a picture and write adesciption about future fantasy / dream job. How can youinfluence the direction of asustainable future in your profession?

Students created own presentations (1slide on PowerPoint, including the picture and the text).

Visit to Paimio Sanatorium

Paimio Sanatorium is a place where we learned more about tuberculosis and how people were treated to start feeling better. The main building is built in a lung-shaped form because tuberculosis is a lung disease. The architect, Alvar Aalto, is a very famous architect both in Finland and abroad.

Cooking at Vista school

Cooking in Vista School was a wonderful experience where we had the opportunity to prepare our own meal - meatballs, mashed potatoes and mocha brownies. This type of activity helped bring together all the students from different cultures.
